At Codazen, we're all about rethinking experience. Now, shopping for VR headsets, smart video calling devices, and smart glasses is easier than ever.

When Meta wanted to combine their Quest, Portal, and Ray-Ban Stories marketing sites into an all-in-one Meta Store, they teamed up with Codazen to make it happen. We helped Meta create a streamlined, integrated experience where customers can learn about and buy products in a single place. At Codazen, we're all about rethinking experience. CHALLENGES

Meta Quest, Portal, and Ray-Ban Stories each have a multitude of products individually, so combining them into one Meta Store involved thousands of images and videos spread out over sixty webpages. The project required creating a system that would make it easy for designers and developers to navigate those thousands of assets as they build a website to effectively showcase Meta's products.

We hit pain points on the way to reaching our goal. First was the sheer size of the project. It was impossible to optimize and export the assets one by one since there were thousands of them. The more files that needed to be changed, the harder it was to keep track of the changes. Second was finding the perfect balance between functionality and maintainability when it came to CMS components. Third was a localization issue. Having duplicates of each asset based on language created bloat, and translated text would vary in length depending on the language. Fourth was the status of the assets. It was necessary for everyone to know which pictures and videos were finalized and approved and which were still a work in progress.

METHODOLOGY

Codazen's designers and developers figured out a way to solve each challenge by delivering scalable, user-friendly systems that anyone could utilize.

Thousands of Assets. One Matrix.

By creating a Content Matrix, our team was able to organize the thousands of assets needed for the Meta Store. The Matrix grouped assets by page, page section, and device type. Packaging the images and videos into these groups allowed the design team to get a bird's eye view of everything.

One Click to Change Them All.

Since the groups were outside the actual design, Codazen was able to control the output of the assets. Our team exported all the assets not from the individual design files but from the Content Matrix itself. Art boards were updated from the Matrix in real time, so all instances of a group would automatically match. Globally updating an asset instead of one by one greatly simplified the process.

Balance Is the Way.

Finding the optimal point between functionality and maintainability when it came to CMS components was a key goal for building the site. A component with too much functionality would make it difficult for the developers to change things on a page, since even just one tweak would force them to go through twenty or thirty attributes. By breaking up large components into multiple smaller components and segmenting functionality, our team was able to find the sweet spot.

Yes to Localization. No to Clutter.

The Content Matrix ensured that the art boards would be as clean and uncluttered as possible. It also solved the localization bloat problem since there would be no need to have multiple duplicates of the art boards for all the different countries. This made the process very cut and dried and removed the messiness of having to deal with multiple files. Text translations were a little trickier. Copy that fits perfectly on a single line in English might require two lines in Japanese and three lines in German. Our developers and designers prepared ahead of time and stress tested each page for the worst possible scenario so that if the number of lines did change, the copy would still be centered on the page using the correct margins.

Confusion Out. Color Code In.

With thousands of images and videos, an Asset Delivery System needed to be created so every person working on the project would know the status of each asset. Our color code system made it easy. Even with multiple Meta teams working on this project at once, Codazen's system structure was so understandable that anyone from Quest, Portal, or Ray-Ban Stories could look at the Content Matrix and know how to use it.

Even with multiple Meta teams working on this project at once, Codazen's system structure was so understandable that anyone from Quest, Portal, or Ray-Ban Stories could look at the Content Matrix and know how to use it.

CONCLUSION

Today, we rely so much on technology to stay in touch. Codazen supported the Meta Store's mission of helping people discover the products that can connect them to their world and beyond.

Meta trusted us to deliver thousands of assets that not only looked good but were also highly optimized for loading speed. It's what our designers and developers are experts in – creating the best quality asset compressed at the optimal size for a lighter page load. It doesn't matter how beautiful a website is if no one sees it. When a page doesn't load within 3 seconds, users will leave the site.¹ Meta knew that Codazen would be able to strike the perfect balance between visual quality and image size.

It was important to Meta that their digital store operated smoothly across all devices. Our Content Matrix included assets for multiple devices and screen sizes to ensure responsiveness no matter what phone, tablet, or desktop a customer uses. By implementing breakpoints at precise locations, Codazen ensured consistency across all viewports.

We were able to deliver what Meta needed and set up an easy and efficient system that any team member could use right off the bat. Our designers and developers took the products from three separate brands, synthesized everything into our Content Matrix, and built out the Meta Store website. And we didn't just stop once the Meta Store launched. Our team is still maintaining all the pages we built to make sure every customer has a seamless user experience and the most up-to-date information.
